my friend jen showed her gorgeous terrarium crystal balls at this shop Black Pyramid in SF and i stumbled upon their blog. the best part of their boutique, of course, is their jewelry. SO amazing (and so expensive), and reminds me a lot of my beloved bona drag. i know that my og witchy homegirls and i get perturbed that everything we've been into since seventh grade is UBER-hip right now, but on the other hand it's fairly convenient because everything that was so hard to find is suddenly readily available and i can stock up. it'll go out of style again in a year and then i'll just have more crystals and daggers and go back to being a dork.*

so i have been posting on tumblr way more than here recently, but i try to connect as much as possible. it is the current leading force among young people worldwide on the web. i thought i would share some of the best blogs on there. what's interesting is that it's not like flickr, where all your images are YOURS. it's about sharing, stealing, reblogging, and creating an entire aesthetic for yourself from images that are completely mysterious and unoriginal to you...then other people are like, "yeah, that's my aesthetic too!" and it goes on and on and on...the editing skills and visual maturation of these young kids around the world is incredible..check it for yourself.

so i was having a google rendezvous and i stumbled upon this amazing blog, dangerousminds. you can search a tag, or look up by category, of which there are tons. (i highly recommend all the subcategories under the "art" heading.) i found this fabulous page on 60's avant-garde filmmakers and saw that he even covered marjorie cameron! marjorie was an occultist in the 40's and 50's in pasadena. (!!) she dubbed herself The Scarlet Woman, claiming to have given birth to a spiritual Moonchild, and also invoked the goddess Babalon with future husband, rocket scientist, and occult priest of the Ordo Templi Orientis jack parsons "to unleash a magickal force on the world." that's my kinda lady.*

so following along with my OG goth rant, allow me to introduce the musical signifier of this cultural blend: witch house. pitchfork.com discusses this new genre at length: "...It's been called "drag," "witch house," and "haunted house,"...it's ghostly, slow-moving electro-pop, each with their own unique spin...."drag" is partly a reference to screwed and chopped hip-hop, the syrupy style cooked up by DJ Screw and others in 1990s Houston,...but they're also toying with dub, goth, current electro, ambient house á la KLF's Chill Out, and even chart pop...twisting it and slowing it down, making it druggier..." oh, post-post-modernism. you are at your finest.*

Witchsters and Gypsters.*

it's like malcom gladwell's idea of the tipping point: all of the sudden, things become wildly popular and everyone is into the same trends. in a way, it's cool to see the things i've loved since puberty finally being appreciated, but it's also annoying that things get so appropriated. so it is with all things goth at this moment: everyone is a tarot reader or a gypsy (or, as i recently heard, a "gypster," or a "witchster" ha!), everyone wears black lace and capes and witch boots and loves upside-down crosses and stones and chains and cats and owls...i was talking with my fellow OG goth homegurl on friday night and we were lamenting over this recent aesthetic appreciation of our ever-cherished subculture and the neverending phenomenon of co-opting subcultures for popular culture. there's more to it than black lipstick, dudes (even though we know it does look realllllly cool).*
